Recently me and friends were discussing about y our ancestors had so many children. After a long debate one asked us a question.
"what will u do, if u have no TV,no electricity,no theatre, no good means to travel and visit places, no radio, no entertainment, and above all no condom".

Narayanan and Jagan,

Andru: There was "no TV,no electricity,no theatre, no good means to travel and visit places, no radio, no entertainment, and above all no condom" and hence this was their best past-time. Hence, the population increase.

Indru: We have electricity and because of that we have internet, television and FTV to help us understand the nuances of the "topic" in greater detail. As we are taught in school, Theory is just 20% - Practicals are the remaining 80%. So, as Nike says, we "Just do it!!"..

Venkit,
I think the entertainment media is not enough for our indians. BTW, i read a news which said that there are men[illiterate] who believe that 'anmai' is based on how many kids u have.

Bro, u missed the point, even with millions of years the population is only 6.5 billion now! Considering the fact that the growth is very high only after the advent of all these technologies, in the last 60 years!

remember, india's population was 40crores in 1940's. now it is more than 100 crores.

Definitely lack of contraceptives and family control was a reason for having as many children as possible. However, population exploded only after the advent proper healthcare. On the other hand, life was not as boring as we would assume. Each age had its own glamour:-)

Magnus,
As Aravind, said the population increase can b attributed to health care. Even though the birth rate was more, the death rate was equally high, which put a check to increasing population
